For an average product, Amazon charges 45% of its selling price as a sum of its various fees. But this percentage varies from product to product based on its size, dimensions, weight, and category etc. Lets have a comprehensive look of how the Amazon seller fees work.

How Much Does Amazon Charge To Sell:

Amazon charges various fees to the sellers on its platform. These fees depend on the following things:

  1. The product category you are selling in. (Referral fee percentage) (Per item fee)
  2. Your advertised pricing for that product. (Referral fee)
  3. Your Amazon seller account type i.e. individual or professional. (Per item fee)
  4. Your order fulfilment method i.e. FBA or FBM. (Fulfilment fee)
  5. Your Amazon Seller Central monthly plan type. (Subscription fee)
  6. Your VAT registration type, if you are selling in the UK and Europe. (VAT fee)

Easy Fees Calculator

If you plan to sell on Amazon and want to know how to calculate FBA fees or other related fees for your product, this is the best link for you. Using this calculator you can easily estimate all the fees for the product you plan to sell and see if you will make a profit after paying off all the Amazon fees.

Amazon Seller Fees

Now let’s discuss all the seller fees in a bit more detail. Two types of fees you will encounter when you start selling on Amazon.

  1. Amazon account-related fees
  2. Sales related fees

Account-related fees:

These are the fees related to your Amazon Seller Central subscription charges. if you are selling under an Amazon professional plan then you will pay a $40 monthly fee in the USA and £25 in the UK. If you’re not selling under a professional plan then Amazon will charge you per item fee for each unit you sell. And this will be in addition to the referral fee that you will pay on that unit. See this table:

Country Account Type Best for Monthly Fee Per Item Fee
USA Individual Seller Individuals and occasional sellers $0 $0.99
USA Professional Seller Businesses and volume sellers $39.99
UK Individual Seller Occasional sellers who don’t want to advertise or use advanced tools £0 £0.75 (excl. VAT)
UK Professional Seller Businesses and volume sellers who want to use advanced selling tools and want to sell in the restricted categories. £25 (excl. VAT)

Sales related fees:

You pay these fees on each sale you make on Amazon. Let’s discuss each one of these one by one.

Referral fee:

When you make a sale Amazon will charge you a fixed percentage of the selling price of the product. This is called the referral fee and it varies from product category to category. For example, in the below table, you can see how the referral fee percentage changes if you list your product in different product categories on Amazon.

Referral fee vs Fixed fee:

You will charge either one of these fees based on whichever is the highest.

Closing fee:

Did you notice that in some categories there is an extra closing fee mentioned in the table? This extra fee is applied to the media-related categories in addition to the referral fee percentage. Examples: Books, DVD, Music, Software and computer/video games, Video, and Video game consoles.

High-volume listing fee:

This fee applies if the seller exceeds 2 million SKUs in a given month and is calculated as £0.0003 per SKU over the 2 million threshold. It’s essentially a fee for having a large number of products listed.

For instance, if a seller lists a total of 2.5 million active non-media SKUs during the month, the fee applied for that month would be £150 (500,000 SKUs above 2 million x £0.0003).

This fee structure is designed to encourage efficient use of Amazon’s resources and to ensure that sellers with a high volume of listings contribute proportionately to the costs associated with managing those listings.

In Case of Return Order: Fee Refund?

Refund processing fees are applied when refunds are issued to customers for orders where referral fees have been previously charged. Amazon will reimburse sellers the referral fee amount for the refunded item(s), deducting a refund administration fee. This fee is calculated as the lesser of £5.00 or 20% of the referral fee.

Example:

If you issue a refund to a customer for a £20.00 item falling under a category with a 12% referral fee, your refund administration fee would be calculated as follows: £20.00 x 12% = £2.40. Therefore, the refund administration fee in this case would be £0.30, as it is the lesser of £5.00 or 20% of £2.40.

FBA Fee:

Amazon provides order fulfilment services to its sellers in which they store, pack, and ship products to the customers. You just send the whole inventory to their fulfilment centre at once and they fulfil the orders once they start coming. For this fulfilment service, Amazon charges a fee which is called the FBA fee. FBA fee is charged per unit of the product depending upon the product’s dimensions and weight.

Product Type SD Card Toaster Wooden Cabinet Keyboard
Product size Small Envelope Standard Parcel Standard Oversize Large Oversize
Dimensions 3.2 x 2.4 x 0.2 cm 25.5 x 18.5 x 17 cm 74 x 56 x 32 cm 150 x 10 x 10 cm
Outbound Shipping 30 g 2.2 kg 6.2 kg 5.4 kg
Sell on Amazon.co.uk – Fulfil from inventory in UK £1.71 £5.65 £8.24 £12.52
Sell on European stores – Fulfil from inventory in UK (Remote Fulfilment) €4.05 €11.07 €18.26 €25.62

Storage Fee:

If you keep your product in the FBA centre for more than a month then Amazon will also charge you a FBA storage fee. Details are as follows.

Month Clothing,  Shoes and Bags (standard size) Dangerous Goods – Hazmat (standard size) All other categories (standard size) Dangerous Goods – Hazmat (Oversize) All other categories (Oversize)
January – September £0.52 per cubic foot per month £0.75 per cubic foot per month £0.78 per cubic foot per month £0.65 per cubic foot per month £0.51 per cubic foot per month
October – December £0.66 per cubic foot per month £1.05 per cubic foot per month £1.21 per cubic foot per month £0.90 per cubic foot per month £0.70 per cubic foot per month

Amazon Prep Charges:

Amazon also provides product labeling and bundling etc. services these are called prep services. Before you send your inventory to Amazon you have to properly label your product and out boxes/ pallets. You can also ask Amazon to do it in that case there will be an extra fee for each step of prep you require. To know the exact charges as per your product you can use this calculator for the UK and this for the USA.

Example:

For an average product (Dimensions ‏ : ‎ 1 x 7 x 10 inches;  Weight: 1.48 Pounds)in the household category, the prep charges are as follows.

For the UK For the USA
Opaque bagging £0.36 Inventory placement $0.41
Tape £0.25 Opaque bagging $1.00
Label £0.27 Tape $0.60
Bagging £0.35 Label $0.55
Bubble wrap £0.45 Bagging $0.70
Bubble wrap $1.04

Avoid FBA Fees:

If you are not availing of FBA services and fulfilling your order by yourself from your warehouse then this is called FBM. There is no fee on FBM (fulfilled by merchant). Hence you can avoid FBA and Storage fees by adopting the FBM model.

Important things to note FIRST!

Before you contact any supplier make sure you keep in mind the following:

  • The wholesaler or distributor should be authentic and Amazon should accept their invoices. Otherwise, it will cause issues later on.
  • Make sure the supplier is old enough. you can use this free age checker tool to find out how long they have been in business.
  • They have a working address and a phone number.

Why Do Brands Give Intellectual Property Complaints?

In the US, the majority of brands have a strict Amazon policy, meaning they do not permit you to purchase inventory from them for resale on the platform. Some of them also refrain from using Facebook Ads, TikTok Ads, and Google Ads. In the UK however, this is not that dominant.

This behavior could be attributed to several factors. 3rd party sellers buy their inventory wholesale and start a price war on Amazon. This is not good for any brand’s reputation. The presence of counterfeit products is also a concern.

Many brands now have only a couple of approved 3rd party sellers that are allowed to sell on Amazon. If you list their product on Amazon without permission, they will likely issue an intellectual property (IP) complaint, which could result in a strike against your account. This can damage your seller central health and sometimes can deactivate your seller central.

My IP-Complaint Checker Database

That’s why I’ve compiled a list of such brands in my database, Not all of the brands are the ones that I personally had experience with, but some of them are. Just search with a brand name and you will know which brand has given IP complaints in which Amazon marketplace. I constantly update this list whenever my team face an IP problem with a brand.

Sometimes your competitors may also file an IP complaint against you, which you can have removed with the right strategy. This has already happened to me in the US marketplace.

First Make Sure Your Emails Land in INBOX.

Many people complain that they are not getting replies to their emails from the brand they contact. There are strong chances that your emails are not landing in their inbox, instead, they are being marked as spam eventually landing in the spam box. In this regard, the most important thing that you should consider is to use a reputed email hosting service for your Amazon FBA business like Google Business Suite, MailChimp, Zoho etc… I personally have hosted my business email with Zoho and my experience has been pretty good so far. You have to make sure that your email server does not have a bad reputation or its IP is not blocked and your wholesale FBA supplier is receiving your emails.

Understand the Email Template

Please watch this helpful video to understand the email template for contacting suppliers and see things working live.

[presto_player id=3279]

Before you contact a supplier make sure you have calculated your profit on that product.

Email Landing Confirmation.

To check where are your emails landing you can go to gmass.co, copy all the email addresses provided at the top and try sending emails to them. After that come back to gmass.co and search with your website’s domain name in the search bar. You can see where your emails have landed for each email address.

What to Include in Your Email Template?

The next thing you can make sure of is that your email is imposing a professional impression like it was sent by a person from a reputed company. Make sure to use a signature at the bottom and make the greeting line more personal by including the brand’s name or the person’s name to whom you are writing. This is very crucial. A personalised email stands out among all other emails and some email hosting software like Google may mark such an email as important.

Email’s Body:

In the body of your email try to add a trigger sentence and slightly talk about the brand’s benefit instead of just saying “We are this, this company and we want a trading account”.

Issues You Can Face:

Sometimes this happens that the person on the other end is just an operator handling emails. His management team has already instructed him to decline every email that requests a wholesale or trading account. In that case, no matter how well you present it, he is gonna decline or just will not reply to your mail.

Solution:

The solution to that is to do a little homework. Know your recipient beforehand and add trigger sentences according to that.

For example, in this case, you can write to him that you are a service provider and you have a plan, already sorted out to increase their sales or something like that. Now he may direct your mail to the person in charge of the sales or at least will reply to your email.

If you do not do your homework then you are not gonna get any positive outcome from the phone calls either. So, do your homework and then go for an email.

Automate Contacting Brands.

I have already shown you this step in the video. You should set up Microsoft Outlook for managing your FBA business emails. I too, use Outlook to handle my client’s company’s emails. You can send hundreds of emails to multiple wholesale FBA suppliers in one click to multiple recipients with a personalised greeting for every recipient. And also, without letting anybody know about your other recipients, unlike when you paste all recipients in the “send to” bar. Outlook also has an option to request a read receipt. This way you can know that the recipient has read your email.

I have received multiple brand approvals for profitable products over emails alone. And I’m sure if you follow these steps, you will get replies.

Brand Approval Template:

After reading this full article you are now capable of making your own email template for contacting suppliers and that should look something like this:

Remember: Don’t copy the exact text in this template because a lot of people on my website will do the same. Therefore you wanna stand out from them. Understand my full article and make your own.

Greetings,

I’m [NAME] from XYZ LLC/LTD. I was looking into your product quality and customer satisfaction online. Your brand perfectly matches the quality and standards we prioritize. We would love to have our customers experience your products. This will help maximize your customer reach. Can you send me your product catalogue and price list?

We are interested in establishing a wholesale account with your company. Could you please inform us of the required documentation for opening a wholesale account? We will promptly provide the necessary documents.

Regards,

[Name/Signature].

Partner Up With Me:

I have a lot of experience in Wholesale FBA. If you are in the UK or the USA you can partner up with me on a profit-share basis. Where I will run the business account, handle all the work and take my share of the net profit. You can explore my website to see my previous results and how much ROI should you expect from this business.

Regards,

Samar.

Are You looking for USA LLC company registration? I will give you a brief overview of how you can register a new US LLC from Pakistan if you are not a resident of the USA.  The top benefits of US LLC registration are:

  • You can get a Paypal business account.
  • You can get a time-limited interest-free loan in the USA.
  • You can accept payments in USD from all around the world.
  • You can get a Stripe account to charge your customers through credit cards.
  • You can apply for a physical bank account in the USA without visiting there.
  • Higher chances of USA Visa success in the future.

As a Non-resident, you can register your LLC in any state of the USA if you have the following:

  1. Passport /photo ID
  2. US address (You can use a virtual address)
  3. US phone number ( Use Skype or VYKE to buy a USA phone number)
  4. Business e-mail
  5. Visa / Master card for the payments (Pakistani Card are also fine)
  6. Services provider/agent

How to Find a Reliable Agent for LLC Registration in the US?

Search on Google with the US state name in which you want to register your LLC as shown in the picture. Choose the agent service with the highest star rating and you are good to go.

Process for LLC registration:

Through your Pakistani passport/photo ID you can register your company on the State government. After you get your LLC you will have to file for an EIN number. An EIN number is necessary, it is like a social security number for your business in the US. Outside of the US, there may be a wait time of around 2-3 months due to the pandemic for that. You will also need to open up a bank account. For that, you have two options;

1. Physical banks, which require your or your partner’s presence on the spot (Note: Your partner’s name should be mentioned in the company’s documents).

2. You can apply at digital banks like Mercury without visiting the place. Mercury is also providing debit cards.

Which State to Register in your LLC?

You can register your company in Delaware, Wyoming, and Hawaii (these US states have low tax rates, normally 4 to 6%). For Amazon wholesale FBA, I’ll suggest you go with Texas or Florida. The whole procedure can be done on your laptop via Anydesk. And all the payments can be made via your card.

For the last 2 years, Wyoming and Delaware were the best to create LLCs but now they have become saturated. From now on the best states for LLC registration are Texas and Florida.
Texas has a high cost for first-time registration as compared to Florida but it has no yearly renewal fee while Florida has $128. Moreover, Texas has a lower tax percentage as compared to Florida. You can also contact me for LLC registration.

If you have a full understanding of the procedure then go for it otherwise I will advise you to hand over the matter to a professional. After all, it’s a one-time thing.

Make sure you get the passport scanned in 600 DPI with a 40x zoom feature without a single alphabet being blurred and the utility bill+ bank statement for bank account creation & Amazon sign-up purposes.

Do you wanna know how to use an Amazon Revenue Calculator? Wanna know if a product is worth your investment and time and calculate its net profit? In the following video, I’m going to show you how to calculate net profit on Amazon and how you can evaluate the profitability of any product, especially on Amazon. I’ll tell you how can you use the Amazon FBA calculator to calculate the net profit and get the product’s profit margin. I’ll also explain to you how the VAT works in the UK and how to include that in your net profit calculation whether you are a VAT-registered or NON-VAT business. And at the end, I’ll also share with you my Excel sheet where I’ve applied all the formulas that will make your life much easier. At the end of this video, you will be able to do product pricing and profit analysis, and Amazon UK VAT calculation using the Amazon revenue calculator.

[presto_player id=3206]

VAT Calculation in the UK For Amazon Seller

In the UK, unlike the United States, it’s crucial to consider Value Added Tax (VAT) when selling products on Amazon. To illustrate this, we’ll use a product example sourced from the UK market. Suppose you intend to sell a product on Amazon for £15, and you acquire it from UK suppliers at £5 each. How much VAT will you pay for this product in total?

The suppliers in the UK will charge you a 20% VAT on the source price, which amounts to £1. So, in total, you will pay £6 for each unit of this product.

On Amazon, all prices shown to customers include VAT. Amazon collects the 20% VAT from customers on your behalf, and it is your responsibility to report it to HMRC later. If you want to know the price without VAT included, simply divide the Amazon selling price by 120%. For example, if you list the product on Amazon at £15, which includes the 20% VAT (equivalent to £2.5), you will not report the full £2.5 to HMRC, as you have already paid £1 to the supplier as VAT. Therefore, the total amount you need to report to HMRC is £1.5.

This results in the total VAT paid being £1 (to the supplier) plus £1.5, which equals 20% of the selling price of the product.

Using the FBA Revenue Calculator and Calculating Net Profit

To calculate the net profit for a product, you can utilize the FBA (Fulfillment by Amazon) calculator. This tool assists Amazon sellers in evaluating their potential profit margins.

Here are the steps to use the FBA calculator:

  1. Visit the FBA calculator by opening a new tab.
  2. Sign in to your Seller Central or continue as a guest.
  3. If you’re evaluating a wholesale FBA product, click “Search Amazon Catalog.”
  4. Copy the ASIN (Amazon Standard Identification Number) from the product information section or URL and search for it in the FBA calculator.

Amazon recommends using the new version of the FBA calculator, as it offers additional features not present in the old version. In this new version, there might be a difference in Amazon fees, particularly if you’re not using an Amazon Professional selling plan. If you’re using the professional selling plan, the fee will automatically adjust.

The FBA calculator will display the product information, and you will enter the Amazon selling price. It will also show other fees such as the FBA fee and storage costs, which are incurred if your inventory remains in Amazon’s fulfillment center for an extended period.

Understanding Amazon Storage Fees

Amazon charges storage fees per unit, and this fee increases after three and six months, with a special fee structure for the fourth quarter due to increased workload. Keep in mind that Amazon encourages sellers to keep inventory in its fulfillment centers for shorter durations.

Creating a Net Profit Calculation Excel Sheet

To perform a comprehensive net profit calculation that accounts for various factors such as VAT, Amazon referral fees, and returns, I have provided an Excel sheet with specific calculations. The Excel sheet is divided into three sections: one for 20% VAT registered sellers, another for non-VAT registered sellers, and a final section for tax-exempt sellers.

The sheet is designed for easy input; users only need to enter values in the yellow cells, and all other cells update automatically. It calculates net profit, breakeven points, and profit margins based on the seller’s VAT status.

For non-VAT registered sellers, the Excel sheet simplifies the process of estimating VAT on Amazon fees, making it easy to understand and apply the calculations.

Recording Product Data in the Excel Sheet

The video also provides guidance on how to record product data in an Excel sheet. I have demonstrated how to fill in the necessary information, such as product ASIN, 90-day Best Seller Rank, monthly sales, minimum order quantity, unit price, and other variables. The Excel sheet then automatically calculates net profit, ROI, and other essential metrics based on the data entered.

Conclusion

Mastering Amazon profit calculations is a crucial skill for any seller on the platform. By understanding the VAT system in the UK, utilizing the FBA calculator, and using a well-designed Excel sheet for net profit calculations, you can make informed decisions about your product listings. Always remember to conduct due diligence and analyze all factors before investing in a product.

Additionally, there are subscription-based tools available that can simplify these calculations and provide instant net profit estimates directly on Amazon listing pages, offering convenience and efficiency to sellers.

In the world of e-commerce, informed decisions and accurate calculations can make a significant difference in your success as an Amazon seller.

You can not completely delete an Amazon PPC campaign as Amazon does not allow that, probably because by deleting a campaign, you will also delete the historical performance data. You can however remove a campaign from your portfolio. If you don’t want to see your expired campaigns in your list simply apply the filter to exclude the inactive campaigns. Or you can also create a separate campaign portfolio and name it “Trash” and keep all of your unwanted campaigns in there.

How to Delete a Portfolio in Amazon Advertising?

You can not delete an Amazon advertising portfolio either. The best thing you can do in this regard is to rename this portfolio to “deleted” or “expired” and keep all of your active campaigns in a new portfolio. You can rename the unused portfolios and put a “z” at the start. That way it will be moved down to the bottom of the list, as Amazon sorts all the portfolios in alphabetical order. See the screenshot below for more clarification.

Now that you have decided what you’re going to sell on Amazon and you have your supplier in hand, it’s time to go through the checklist for proven results. Here you will get some deep insight into the launch strategy of a product on Amazon.

Amazon New Product Launch Checklist

If you have got your product manufactured and now you are ready to launch the product on Amazon, make sure:

  • Listing is optimized
  • Know your main keywords
  • Price lower than the competition
  • Listing has reviews
  • Generate one-time useable promo codes
  • Max order quantity set at one unit
  • Listing is FBA
  • You own your buy box
  • The listing is indexed for your keywords
  • You are tracking keywords

Optimized Listing

When you present your product on Amazon for the first time make sure your listing is optimized that means your main image should be catching customers’ attention and at the same time should be compliant with Amazon’s policy. As per Amazon’s policy, you should use a white background and only display the product or things that you are going to ship to the customers and nothing else.

Listing Images

For some products, It is not very attractive to show only the product in the main image. Sometimes It’s hard to figure out what your product is really about, for example, it’s hard to identify what this product is really about.

In such a case, you can show the product in use for example with eggs in this case. But I’d suggest you print a nice converting picture on the product’s packaging and display the product packaging in the main image. As you are shipping the product with the packaging so technically you are shipping everything that you are displaying on the main image. I’ll talk in detail about converting images in my other article.

Apart from images, your listing should contain 20-30 highly searched phrases and all the relevant keywords in the title, Amazon search terms, bullet points, and description. The most widely used software tool for keyword research is Helium10’s Cerebro. You can use this tool to analyze your competition and know what keywords they are targeting and getting sales on.

Bullet Points Copy:

Also make sure you have a good listing copy, especially the bullet points. Generally, a customer on Amazon checks out 4 things before buying a product. These are the title, images, price, and bullet points. Write benefit-focused bullet points instead of product features. For example, if you are selling a baby toy, instead of writing “It weighs half a pound” try to phrase it as “The baby can carry around easily”.

Listing’s Main Keywords

Make sure you know your listing’s main keywords because your end goal is to rank for those keywords organically. It is also required for advertising purposes. Once you research your main keywords you can use Helium10’s Magnet tool to find out more related keywords along with their search volumes. That way you can start focusing on low-competition keywords that are easy to rank on and make your way up toward the highly searched keywords.

Price Lower Than the Competition

When your listing is new and does not have any reviews or a few reviews the customer hesitates to trust your product. Therefore, you have to compensate for it by offering a lower price than your competition. A good copy in your listing with the added advantage of a lower price does convince more buyers. And once you get your listing ranked and have more reviews to show, you can slowly increase your price.

Get Listing Reviews

After you launch the product try to get the early reviews as soon as possible. You can try the Amazon Vine program to get more reviews if you are brand registered. There is also another way that sellers use to get initial sales and reviews, called “Search, Find, Buy”. This means that they give away their product for free but the buyer has to search and find the product and then buy it. This is a risky method and If not handled with care can terminate your seller central as it mixes with Amazon’s terms of service and review policy. Getting reviews is a major factor in success that’s why I have a complete article on this website about getting more reviews. In that article, I have included all the safe methods that I use to get my client Amazon reviews.

Generate Promo Codes and Set Order Quantity

Promo codes are mostly used to generate traffic from outside of Amazon. I’ll discuss it later in this article. Make sure you generate one-time useable promo codes. You wanna set the maximum order quantity to one unit because you don’t want a single person to avail of all the discounts.

Listing Is FBA And Own Your Buy Box

Make sure you are sending inventory to the Amazon warehouse. Because more buyers have a monthly subscription to Amazon and they prefer the Prime listings i.e, FBA. If your competitors are doing FBA and you are doing FBM then it’s very difficult to compete and outrank them. Especially when you are new Its gonna take forever to rank unless your product is very unique and has very low competition.

The next thing you should make sure of is that you own your buy box. You may lose the buy box if Amazon thinks your price is too high or someone else starts selling on the same listing you created with a much lower price. I’ll discuss that in another article about how to deal with such a situation.

Listing Is Indexed and You Are Tracking Keywords

Once you put in all the keywords in your listing and optimize it for conversion make sure Amazon is indexing your listing for all those keywords. Also, make sure to track your rank for your focused keywords. Helium10 has a keyword tracker tool that lets you enter the list of keywords and it keeps track of your listing’s rank against those keywords. You can access this tool here Keyword Tracker [track product rank against keywords]

Honeymoon Period

Now there are a few other things to keep in mind while launching a product on Amazon. When a new listing is created on Amazon it does not have any past sales data. Meaning Amazon is completely unaware of how this new listing will convert for any keyword or impression. That’s why for the first couple of weeks Amazon gives you the benefit of the doubt and trusts your keywords in regards to the relevancy of the product.

Therefore, you have to prove to Amazon that you are actually relevant by converting more. So Amazon keeps showing your product for those keywords. In this initial period, which is called the Honeymoon period, Amazon prefers to show your product at more and more places easily that it would not otherwise show. For example, if you’re running a PPC campaign on Amazon, it will show your ad at a lower cost. And It will give your listing a high ranking in sponsored rank compared to other old listings.

Its Source?

The honeymoon period is not an official term from Amazon. It’s just a word someone used at the start and this concept hit the market. Also, Amazon has not released any such thing confirming this behavior of the algorithm. But, over the years from multiple sellers around the world, this behavior of Amazon’s algorithm has been observed and is now known for a fact.

How Long Is This Honeymoon Period?

There is no confirmed answer. Some people have observed it to be 30 days long some say it lasts for the first 3000 impressions. It also depends upon the product category and the competition. Generally, it is considered to be 30 to 45 days long from the product launch.

You don’t wanna waste this time because the momentum that you get during this time is all that you want for a successful launch. Don’t just throw your product off and then work on its listing, sourcing, and logistics. Make sure you have everything ready before you get your new product launched on Amazon. Get your listing optimized, and your A+ content and video content in place.

If you don’t have everything ready or your listing is not optimized you are going to have a lower conversion at the start. This will demotivate the algorithm to prioritize you. Even if you fix the listing later that low conversion history is going to stay there forever. You can’t erase that and any improvement in the later stages will not help that much. Also, make sure you get your product live with enough inventory.

How Many Units Should You Have in Stock?

This depends upon your lead time, i.e. How much time you need to replenish the inventory before running out of stock. It mainly depends on your product category and the competition. If it’s a highly competitive niche then you’re gonna probably go with the higher number of units in stock. Generally, I would suggest that you have at least one month of the inventory in FBA as per your monthly estimated sales.

When you ship your product to Amazon and it changes the status from “reserved” to “in stock” in your seller central that’s the point when you hit the party, activate your listing, and start benefitting the honeymoon period.

Advance Listing Setup

If you are setting up the listing in advance while your product is still being manufactured at the supplier, you can do it but make sure to set the future release date there. Although your product will not show up if you don’t do this. But, you should do it as a safety measure for your product’s honeymoon period.

Remember, you don’t wanna start off with slow sales. You wanna start with a bang and build the momentum from there.
The best practice would be to follow the multi-channel approach i.e. generate traffic also from advertising outside of Amazon.

Advertising Outside of Amazon

The number of online touchpoints before a purchase is increasing. These touch points include YouTube videos watched, Google queries searched and forums read. This means people are searching more about a product before buying it than ever before. Therefore, if you want to build a lasting brand you got to compete on all platforms that people mostly use.

For your Amazon launch, you can generate a one-time useable coupon at maybe a 90% discount and generate a search URL for your product.
A quick fact I wanna mention here is that Amazon does not give much weightage to sale that happens at a heavy discount price.

Search URL

The search URL is the URL that appears in your browser when you hit enter after searching with a keyword. If someone buys your product after searching it from a specific keyword, this uplifts your product and helps you rank higher for those keywords.
Now people on social media or any other place are not going to go through the hassle of searching for the product with your desired keywords and then buying it.

Therefore, you will have to generate a direct link to your product for the people. And at the same time, you want Amazon to think that someone actually searched for the product before buying it. You can use Helium10 to generate such links for your desired keywords. You can also contact me for an Amazon product launch service, and I’ll generate such links for you. Now if someone clicks on this URL, it will take them right to your Amazon product page. And if a sale happens Amazon’s algorithm will see it as if someone searched for it before buying. This helps improve the product ranking on Amazon.

FB Ads and Manychat for Amazon Sellers

Facebook has more active users than any other social platform. Wondering how you can use Facebook Ads to launch your product? You can run ads with promotions and ask the user to DM (direct message) you to get the PROMO code. When they do, you simply provide them with the search URL to your Amazon product that we discussed above.

Also, provide them with the promo code using the Manychat bot that you will have configured in your messenger inbox. This whole process will work on automation with ManyChat. You can use Helium10’s Cerebro and Magnet tools to find out how many units you have to sell daily to rank on the first page for those keywords. Then you can generate the same number of promo codes and disperse them to your Facebook audience. Facebook audience selection is also important. You should know how to research and target the right audience for your product. When people buy your product from the promo codes that you disperse in the messenger inbox you can follow up with them a few days later for a review. This helps to generate more sales with more reviews. The faster you get reviews the faster you outrank your completion on Amazon. But remember you should not exceed the review posting rate above 25% otherwise, it will get flagged in Amazon’s algorithm.

Influencer Marketing ROI

Nowadays a brand’s success is going more towards how well people know you. If you have your own audience that means your brand can survive in the long run. This can be done by building a team of influencers. Return on investment (ROI) with influencers is recorded as up to 500 to 600%. Meaning for each dollar spent you can get $5 to $6. Generally, a 300% ROI is considered good on any advertising medium or platform. If you manage to build a team of influencers on Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube It will make the launch process of your further products much easier.

Google Shopping Ads

When you advertise PPC outside of Amazon you will notice that cost per click (CPC) will be lower than on Amazon PPC. But the conversion will also be lower than your own Amazon store. 20% of US buyers start their search on Google before ending up buying it on Amazon. Therefore Google ads are a great way to expand your brand’s exposure.
Google smart shopping ads are the simplest ads to set up, It’s like Amazon’s automatic campaign type. In this you let Google handle everything, the bid optimization and placement, etc. Let’s discuss the quick pros and cons of these ads.

Pros:

  • Google has reserved some display places specifically for smart shopping ads.
  • Smart Shopping campaigns include dynamic remarketing ads.
  • Smart Shopping ads can show up across Google Surfaces (YouTube, GDN, Shopping Tab, Search, Search Partners).
  • Aside from feed updates or issues or changes in ROAS targets, Google handles the rest. This could be good as Google knows a lot about the user e.g., what are the things that he is interested in, what types of websites he visited, and want he is looking for on the internet.

Cons:

  • You can’t add negative keywords.
  • You can’t run a search term report
  • You can’t have more than one ad group in a smart shopping campaign.
  • You can’t opt out of networks.

Use Canonical URL for Ranking on Google

A canonical URL is the URL of your Amazon product which is indexed on Google. If this URL contains the keywords your product will appear in Google search results. So, make sure you generate a proper canonical URL when you create a new listing. The canonical URL contains 5 words from your product title. If you want to make sure that your desired words are used in the canonical URL make sure you add a dash (-) after the first five words in your Amazon product title. This way Amazon will generate the canonical URL with those first five words. Otherwise, it will just take random 5 words from your title.

Amazon Posts

If you are brand registered, Amazon posts are also a way to generate free visibility and traffic. This alone may not help that much but all these methods together generate a snowball effect. Use everything you can, because it makes a huge difference that how fast you rise on Amazon.

Amazon PPC, Advertising Inside of Amazon

After your product is live start PPC right away. Don’t wait for the first couple of reviews also don’t ignore them either.

You will have less conversion rate and it will be more expensive. But remember you will get reviews from sales and reviews to drive sales. It’s a chicken and the egg story really. You can only enroll in the Amazon Vine Program if you have a brand registry with Amazon. So, consider doing that as well these will be free reviews.

Ninja Hack/ Pro Tip: you can list your variations products as stand-alone ASINs at the start. For example, if you have a product with 3 variations, instead of listing them as parent-child ASINs, list them all as independent ASINs and enroll in the review program. When you will get some reviews on each ASIN you can combine all these ASINs under one ASIN’s variations later. This will also add up all their individual reviews. This you can get more reviews faster.

Use the PPC search term report to analyze and tweak your listing a bit within the first 30 days. In the brand registry, Amazon also allows A/B testing. For example, you can test two different titles and some other listing parameters too.

Be Patient!

it usually takes 10 days for this process to get rolling. And it can take up to 3 months to really know the potential of your product and to know how this product gonna perform. I’d like to give my product 6 months before I make a decision if I’m gonna cut it or stick with it.

Launching a Product is An Expense!

Remember if your listing does not have reviews or you are launching the product you need to forget about the profit. You have to understand that launching is an EXPENSE. If you manage to sell at the breakeven that is more than enough.

Sometimes you have to sell at a loss as well to rank your product on the first page. Once your product is ranked then you can recover all the costs. If your product is in a very low competitive niche you can expect to generate some profit in the launch phase as well.
If you do the “Search, Find, Buy” method to get early sales and people buy it after clicking on your ad that is also a good thing. Because Amazon sees that your ads are converting and shows them in more and more places.
Helium10’s Cerebro and Magnet tool has a special column named: ‘CPR” that tells you how many sales you have to get to rank on page 1.

Remember!

Remember your goal is to sell as many units as possible and gain sales velocity. If you run out of stock that pretty much means you are gonna need to go through all those troubles again. And if you are relaunching an existing or older product that will be even more difficult to continue with. Sometimes it’s even worth ditching the existing listing and starting all over. If you still can’t avoid getting out of stock for some reason “close the listing” to avoid greater damage.

I also wanna mention here that like every other business this FBA business also contains risk. And there is no guarantee that your product will rank or go successful even after following all these pro steps. But if you follow them your chances of success will be much higher. Also, read my article about getting more and more reviews on Amazon.

When marketing is done in a way where the marketer finds and approaches different people online and tries to sell them his product for free in return for an “honest” review, then it is termed proxy marketing.

Think of it as giving a product sample to a customer and not charging them instead, you ask for a testimonial. This type of marketing is mostly used by new Amazon sellers or for newly created Amazon listings. A PPC campaign does not generate good results if your listing has zero reviews. There are other ways too to get reviews on newly created Amazon listings, for example, the Amazon Vine program. But that is very time-consuming and there could be weeks before you get your first couple of reviews on your listing. Proxy marketing can be very helpful if done right and if the marketer knows what things benefit the listing in ranking and how to avoid Amazon TOS violations or at least how not to get caught.

How to Make Money With Proxy Marketing?

If you have people in your contact who can buy products on Amazon, then you can make money with it. All you have to do is to join this WhatsApp Group (Don’t worry, no one can see your number other than the community admin): https://chat.whatsapp.com/EwSN9pKmjOMIQEcWcqJQZB

In this group, new products are uploaded that are available for review. You can share these products with the buyers and make money in commission. Win-win for everyone.

  • The buyer gets to keep the product for free
  • You get your commission
  • The seller gets his product reviewed

Did you notice, that in the second line of this article, I used air quotes for the word “honest”? You know everyone wants a 5-star review. So, what the people start doing is that they have others place the order at full price and then refund the amount outside of Amazon after they place a 5-star review.

Commonly Used Terms

PMM

PMM Stands for the proxy marketing manager. This is the guy who has a team or group of people who can buy products on Amazon. Or, he has people in contact who can find such people i.e. the people who are interested in posting a product review on Amazon.

PM

PM is any individual who has Amazon buyer in hand or is able to find such people.

Jenny

Jenny is the informal word for the buyer who will buy and test the product for review.

Aslam Bhai

Aslam is the informal word for the Amazon seller who wants his product tested and reviewed.

Do you have a listing already created for quite some time and wondering how to resume it and rank it on Amazon?

How to Relaunch an Existing Product on Amazon?

Many sellers have different ways to do this. Some people talk about an option that you can go for as below

Delete everything from your listing (leave only a single letter in the fields that are required, such as the title and the first bullet point). Save the listing and leave it there for one hour. Then, you can test that your listing no longer indexes for most keywords, and re-input all of the text &  start applying all the new listing launch strategies. This should restart indexing for all the keywords, making them easier to rank for.

In my opinion, I don’t think of it as the way to go. I personally believe Amazon is not that stupid and ties all the data/ history to the ASIN and other listing parameters that are still there.

Even if it works this can prove to be the least effective way to re-launch because it’s kind of a hit or miss. If this doesn’t work, you never know when to pull the plug and stop putting time and money into it. This may increase only the losses over time.

2nd Method: Restart With a New ASIN

This method could be a good second shot for your product. In order to restart with a new ASIN, you simply remove your inventory and then send it back in with a brand-new listing and UPC. If you already have good reviews, you can send them in as a variation (and hopefully variations share reviews in your category).

I recommend you get UPC codes from GS1.org. Amazon itself requires you to get UPC codes from GS1 and has started to enforce this. When you create a listing and enter the UPC code, Amazon accesses the GS1 database to check if you are registered there.

But I’ll say if you get a cheaper UPC code from somewhere else and you somehow manage to create the listing with that UPC, go for it. I don’t see much benefit in buying expensive UPC codes just for the relisting of your product. Once this new variation of ASIN starts getting sales and gets ranked, you can switch the traffic to your previous ASIN which was created with your original UPC code from GS1.

3rd Method: Reset the Honeymoon Period Without Losing Reviews

There is a ninja trick or hack that could rest the honeymoon period of your product. If you are interested, follow the below steps.

  1. Take a screenshot of your ASIN, SKU, FNSKU, MFG part number, and a URL link to your ASIN.
  2. Open a support ticket asking for the access to “Category listing report”
  3. Once you get the access and it’s activated, generate inventory reports (CSV) for all categories you sell in.
  4. Update the flat file fields for the URL links to your images & any other relevant fields.
  5. Delete the ASIN from your Seller Central (be sure you took the screenshots i.e., step# 1)
  6. Wait at least 15 minutes to a day, then upload the flat file you updated using the original ASIN and the original SKU. This is critical, your original ASIN has to be in this flat file. You are basically gonna re-upload it.
  7. Sometimes this results in stranded inventory, if so, open a case with Amazon to fix it. Amazon will walk you through this.
  8. Your product will come back up. If it does not, just open a case with Amazon and tell them you accidentally deleted the product and want to reactivate it. When you do that your product’s honeymoon period starts over as there won’t be any sales history tied to your listing. In this method, you don’t lose your listing reviews.

4th Method: Re-Branding

This is the costliest option and you should only go for it if you are sure that your product is very high quality and offers a unique value. In this option, you change your product packaging, logo, brand name, or all of these and try to repeat the launch steps all the way from the start. Of course, all of these methods are worth trying if you have a high-end product and an optimized listing.

5th Method: Get Faster Reviews This Time

Getting Faster reviews creates a snowball effect. Reviews on Amazon is a next-level game. I have a detailed article on this website about how to get more reviews. In short, you need a loyal audience in your database that can do the action for you. Or you can hire a 3rd party professional like me who can use his audience to do the job.
